Digital Threats: Research and Practice
Special Issue on Election Security

Guest Editors:

  • Ron Bandes, VoteAllegheny
  • Juan Gilbert, University of Florida
  • Bobbie Stempfley, CERT
  • Steven W. Stone, Mitre

Inadequate Election security is a growing threat to democracy. As elections use more technology, digital threats become more apparent. Interference in elections has been at the center of State level legislation. The National Academies recently released a report titled, “Securing the Vote: Protecting American Democracy” that describes existing and future threats. To facilitate further research in election security, this special issue welcomes research articles, best practices, etc. that address election security. We are especially interested in articles that describe applied practices from the field.

The topics of interest of this special issue include but are not limited to

  • Voter registration databases
  • Advances in risk-limiting audit
  • Absentee voting
  • Usable security in elections
  • Open source
  • End-to-end verifiability
  • Election Night Reportage Systems
  • Ballot Marking Devices
  • Internet Voting

We welcome three types of research contributions:
Research manuscripts reporting novel methodologies and results (up to 25 pages).
Benchmarks, datasets, repositories, and demonstration systems that enable further research and facilitate research on situational awareness. These papers should be of interest to the broad cybersecurity research community (10 pages + links to such systems).
Practitioners are welcome to submit a journal style research paper or a “Field Notes” paper. A “Field Notes” paper is a short case report, emphasizing a particular development or application over a rigorous study or proof of security.
To submit to this special issue, please visit ACM Manuscript Central at mc.manuscriptcentral.com/dtrap and select paper type “Special Issue on Election Security.” Details of the author guidelines for DTRAP are available at dtrap.acm.org/authors.cfm.
