Field Notes: rapid communications in the DTRAP journal

Digital Threats is a constantly evolving field.  New malware, attacks and defenses are constantly appearing, re-appearing, or disappearing. The events by themselves are worthy of study, but they don’t quite reach the scope of a research article, and we don’t expect full articles on them.

Instead, ACM DTRAP is announcing a new paper type called Field Notes.  Field Notes are common in the Social Sciences.  They’re not a comprehensive research article, and they aren’t expected to be–they’re the record of an event that was seen in the field. A researcher could use it to announce the discovery of a new species of fish, or some other field observation that would benefit the community if communicated quickly.

We want Field Notes to spark discussion, to suggest a line of research, or to inspire others to perform their own field research.  Field Notes are a springboard into new inquiries.

Field notes are expected to be between 1,000 and 1,500 words and will be peer reviewed, but not with the same depth of criteria as for a research paper.

Field notes should be:

  • Relevant to the field of Digital Threats
  • An unusual or novel occurrence
  • A complete story, with as much evidence as you can provide

Thank you for bringing your work to us for publication! Our community needs more and better communication while preserving our progress for future professionals to learn.
